The term dates back to 2005, at a time when customers were not in the habit to buy things online. Therefore, retailers offered huge discounts to lure people to purchase things online. The term Cyber Monday was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation and Scott Silverman. The term made its debut on November 28, 2005, in a Shop.org press release.

According to a report on Cnet, the term Cyber Monday arrived because the internet was referred to as cyberspace back then. The reason why the day started being celebrated on a Monday was because back then people had a high-speed internet connection only at their offices, and so they liked to shop while at work. Also, Monday proved a lucrative day for online stores, so they embraced it.
Over the years, online spending on the occasion of Cyber Monday has jumped. In 2018, according to Adobe Analytics Cyber Monday hit a record $7.9 billion of online spending which was a 19.3 percent increase from a year ago.
